History

The Church of Scientology in Los Angeles was the very first Scientology Church in the world, founded in February 18, 1954 by several Los Angeles area Scientologists. It started out in a small building in Glendale, California.

The Church moved twice to larger quarters over the next 10 years as it expanded. In 1965, it expanded into two organizations, Day and Foundation, with two separate staffs. The Day organization was open during the weekdays, and the Foundation organization was open during evenings and weekends. The Church was then able to serve its parishioners 7 days a week, 14 hours a day. Many staff from other churches in the US come to the LA Church to study to become spiritual counselors.

In 1977, the Church moved into its current location on Sunset Blvd.

In 1992, a project was launched to completely renovate the LA Church. This renovation project was completed in early 1995 and the grand opening of the new facilities coincided with the 41st Anniversary of the founding of the LA Church on February 18, 1995.

The newly renovated Church has over 66,000 square feet of space. The new quarters include a chapel and auditorium, a bookstore, many course rooms for the study of Scientology, a library of materials, staff offices, and the Hubbard Guidance Center, where Scientology and Dianetics counseling take place.
